We visited the office of the Information Commissioner of Slovenia as part of the Managers’ IT Club

On Shrove Tuesday, February 13th, as part of the Managers’ IT Club, we met at the Office of the Information Commissioner of Slovenia.

Information officer Mojca Prelesnik first informed us of the statistics of the previous year 2023, namely: statistics of IP proceedings, statistics of misdemeanor cases, cross-border control and others such as e.g. written opinions, comments, etc. We were also presented with dilemmas, and we were warned about innovations and changes that must be taken into account.
For example, special attention must be paid to the security of personal data that is the subject of the procedure, to the creation and storage of diary entries, and there are also innovations in video surveillance. The good news is that there are no more fees when issuing a decision on biometrics. EU acts will also soon become important: the act on digital services (use of algorithms…), the act on artificial intelligence and the act on data management.

We were introduced to some interesting judgments of the EU court.

Then the deputy information commissioner, mag. Andrej Tomšič presented the technological challenges facing the field of personal data protection. He highlighted the following areas: digital currencies, cognitive privacy (for example, implanting a chip in the brain), smart cities, smart (video) surveillance, artificial intelligence and genetic data.

We have familiarized ourselves with the recommendations and guidelines for conducting a personal data protection impact assessment (DPIA). We were also shown information about some punishments in EU countries. The Office of the Information Commissioner also publishes publications, which are available on their website: https://www.ip-rs.si/publikacije/prirocniki-in-smernice. Updated content according to ZVOP-2 is also available at pages on subject of legislation.

Certification of IT programs, platforms for online sales, loyalty clubs, online banking and biometric entry/exit systems is also being prepared.

As always at these kinds of meetings, in the informal work we also learn about interesting things from practice, dilemmas of the companies of some of the participants, and the participants had the opportunity to immediately ask for their opinion and were given good instructions for the future.
